The International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) is a worldwide organization of judges and lawyers united in affirming international law and rule of law principles that advance human rights. Its strategic goals for 2021-2025 are: (1) to develop, defend, and strengthen international institutions, instruments, and standards on rule of law and human rights; (2) to improve domestic implementation of, and compliance with, international law and standards; (3) to bolster the effectiveness and independence of judges and lawyers; and (4) to improve access to justice for all and accountability. With its Headquarters based in Geneva, Switzerland, ICJ has a presence in Africa, Latin America, Asia & the Pacific, Europe & Central Asia, and the Middle East. 

We are seeking a Communications and Governance Associate to provide communications support to the Development and Donor Relations Team, and to assist the Secretary General in relation to his governance role supporting the Executive Committee. The ideal candidate will have experience communications and events experience in an international NGO or international organization and possess excellent organisational and English writing skills. 

RESPONSIBILITIES 

Reporting directly to the Director of Programmes and Donor Engagement, the Communications and Governance Associate will hold the following responsibilities: 

1.      Communications: 

  • Liaise with regional communications officers and colleagues to identify key results and change from projects and develop these into engaging content; 
  • Share content on a range of social sites, the website, and through an external newsletter ; 
  • Track metrics across all sites to ensure increased engagement; 
  • Maintain ICJ social sites and organise campaigns linked to publications, key dates and events; 
  • Maintain ICJ website; 
  • Support development of concept notes; 
  • Proofread publications for submission, including donor reporting, and draft Annual Report, with Donor Engagement team colleagues 
  • Support Donor Engagement team on fundraising and reporting tasks as required.

2.      Governance and Support to the Secretary General’s Office: 

  • Serve as a focal point between ICJ and its Commissioners and Executive Committee Members on governance and administrative matters 
  • Coordinate and organize the logistics of the bi-annual Executive Committee Meetings and extraordinary sessions, including the compilation and preparation of documents, drafting and editing the Report of the Secretary-General, and proof-reading the Individual Regional Programme Reports 
  • Take minutes during the Executive Committee meetings and ensure follow up on decisions undertaken during each session  
  • Draft correspondence on behalf of the Secretary-General when required 
  • Maintain and update Commissioner and ExCo Member records, and conduct the ballot for the elections and re-elections of Commissioner and ExCo members 
  • Update the Commissioners and ExCo section on the ICJ Website with up-to-date information on Commissioner terms and biographies 

 PROFILE 

The successful candidate will have: 

Education & Experience 

  • A degree in marketing and communication, international relations, or a related field.  
  • At least three year of communications experience. Relevant experience in an international NGO or an international organisation, preferably in the international human rights field; 
  • Excellent English communication and editing skills and an eye for detail. Good working knowledge of Spanish, Arabic, Russian or French an asset;  
  • Excellent writing skills, familiarity with donor reporting and monitoring and evaluation.   
  • Experience in planning and logistics for events. 
  • Contribution to successful funding applications. 
  • Excellent organisational, planning and time-management skills with an ability to attend to detail. 
  • Creative thinker, good team player and strong interpersonal skills. 
  • Commitment to human rights law.  

Language skill: 

  • Fluent in English (written and spoken). 

Other competencies: 

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.  
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and to adjust priorities flexibly in response to external events;  
  • Problem solving skills and a proactive approach;  
  • Strong interpersonal skills, and ability to work with a multi-cultural team;  
  • Team player with the ability to take initiatives and work under minimum supervision.
