Title: Communications Officer
Reports To: Senior Partnerships, Policy and Advocacy Officer
Duty Station: Home-Based, within +/- 2h time difference from Geneva, Switzerland
Contract: Consultancy contract at 50%
Duration: Until December 31st 2023
Background
The vision of the Principles for Peace Foundation is a world where peace engagements are both durable and impactful. Our mission is to create an environment where peace processes result in lasting positive change, accountable security, and legitimacy, measurable in the well-being and prosperity of societies. Knitting together the threads of diplomacy, politics, security, and real society perspectives, we bring together a broad and global coalition of more than 120 organisations. Our eight Principles for Peace provide a common approach, a set of standards and a diagnostic and accountability tool for action on peace. These Principles were developed through an intensive two-year evidence generation process, collecting data from grassroots to state level, including 700 case studies distilled and 150 consultations in more than 60 countries.
Role Summary:
The Principles for Peace Foundation aims to catalyse system change in the peacemaking and peacebuilding field, through advancing a common frame of reference, standards and metrics, as enshrined in the Principles for Peace. We advocate for the adoption of the Principles among key target audiences through political advocacy and we support and engage partners to build the community of practice and a global alliance to promote collective action around the Principles for Peace. The Communications Officer will advance this mission of system change by supporting the implementation of the Foundation’s political advocacy and communication strategies. Reporting to the Senior Partnerships, Policy and Advocacy Officer (SPPAO), the postholder will provide strategic and tactical communications support across all the organisation’s priority areas.
Specific Duties:
Strategic Communication
- In collaboration with the SPPAO, develop and implement an organisational communications strategy that aligns with the Foundation’s mission and priority areas.
- Develop and lead implementation of tailored communication plans for internal and external events, identifying target audiences, platforms, products and key messages.
- Track and analyse communication efforts, website traffic, social media engagement, and other relevant metrics to measure the effectiveness of communication strategies and make improvements.
Content Creation and Management
- Collaborate with internal teams to gather information and stories on the 1 Foundation's work for external communications.
- Create and publish compelling and timely content for organisational platforms and social media that highlight the Foundation's initiatives and impact.
- Support development of organisational products such as briefs and policy analysis.
- Liaise with external service providers (graphic designers, website editors, etc.) for production and publication of communications content.
- Liaise with counterparts in partner organisations to mutually amplify complementary work on social media and website.
- Ensure consistent and effective branding across all communication materials, maintaining the Foundation's visual and messaging standards.
- Monitor online presence to safeguard the Foundation's reputation and respond appropriately to any communications-related issues.
Media Relations
- Identify opportunities for media coverage of the Foundation's activities and events.
- Support content for media pitches, and coordinate media inquiries and interviews.
Qualifications and skills:
- University degree in Communications, Journalism, Policy and International Relations, or related field.
- Proven experience in communications, public relations, events management or related roles.
- Proven experience in policy development and advocacy. Experience in policy advocacy on peace and security issues is desirable.
- Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills, with an ability to convey complex concepts in a clear and compelling manner. Proficiency in digital communication tools, content management systems, and social media platforms.
- Excellent interpersonal and relationship-building skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent verbal and written skills in English required. Fluency in French, Spanish or Arabic is desirable.
