Background

The Global Survivors Fund (GSF) was launched in 2019 by Dr Denis Mukwege and Nadia Murad, Nobel Peace Prize laureates 2018. Its mission is to enhance access to reparations for survivors of conflict-related sexual violence around the globe, thus responding to a gap long identified by survivors. GSF acts to provide interim reparative measures in situations where states or other parties are unable or unwilling to meet their responsibilities. GSF advocates for duty bearers as well as the international community to develop reparations programmes. It also guides states and civil society by providing expertise and technical support for designing reparations programmes. GSF’s survivor-centric approach is the cornerstone of its work.

Role Summary

The overall role of the Communications Assistant is to support the Communications Unit’s daily tasks and to contribute to several aspects of GSF’s external communications. The communications assistant will work on publications, the production of our annual report, will learn to perform quality assurance on audio-visual material and will get involved in producing social media content.

Position Responsibilities

Publications - Annual Activity Report

Assist the Publications and Audio Visual Officer in producing the Annual Activity Report:

  • Track all written material necessary to produce the Annual Activity Report;
  • Liaise with authors to ensure timely and complete delivery of their content;
  • Assist the Communications Unit on the design phase: photo selection, collection of logos, and other visual elements as needed (maps, infographics, quotes, etc);
  • Draft content as needed.

Publications – Others

  • Support the production of other publications as required, specifically to ensure the correct integration of design modifications.

Audio-visual

  • Assist the Communications Unit in carrying out quality assurance on uploaded audio-visual content on the digital asset management system (Canto); Ensures adequate metadata (captions, credits, tags, etc) is properly attributed to each photo once migrated to the system; Ensures formal and informed consents are available for assets;
  • Provide support during trainings on how to use the digital asset management system for GSF staff outside of the Communications Unit.

Digital and social media

  • Assist the Communications Officer in drafting and publishing posts for GSF’s social media platforms, with the ability to tailor content to platform;
  • Brainstorm ideas for short video content with the Communications Officer, selecting staff to be portrayed and drafting scripts as necessary;
  • Select photos to be featured in social media posts or on the website;
  • Draft short project updates in English for GSF’s website;
  • Compile monthly data on social media performance to review with the Communications Officer.

General 

  • Events: support the Communications Unit on various tasks (create Save the Dates and invitations, use relevant platforms to manage and host events like MailChimp, Eventbrite, and Zoom;
  • Take ad-hoc projects as delegated by the Head of Communications.

Position Requirements

Education and Experience

  • Degree in Communications or related field;
  • Excellent command of written English;
  • Experience in writing;
  • Experience drafting and publishing social media posts.

Other requirements

  • Genuine interest in the work of Global Survivors Fund;
  • Experience with design tools such as Canva or Adobe Suite considered an asset;
  • Interest in website management;
  • Interest in photo management and editorial photo selection;
  • Experience using social media management tools would be an asset;
  • French, Arabic, or Spanish will be considered an asset.
