Job Purpose and Definition
The Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF) is a leading global organisation focused on addressing the root causes of violence through a feminist lens. We are working to create a world of permanent peace built on feminist foundations of freedom, justice, nonviolence, human rights, and equality for all.
We are seeking to hire a Mobilising Men for Feminist Peace (MMF) Initiative Coordinator to provide support to project partners in 14 countries and globally to implement project commitments for WILPF’s Mobilising Men for Feminist Peace Project.
About WILPF: The Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF) is an international non-governmental organization (NGO) with National Sections covering every continent, an International Secretariat based in Geneva, and a New York office focused on the work of the United Nations (UN). Since our establishment in 1915, we have brought together women from around the world who are united in working for peace by non-violent means and promoting political, economic and social justice for all.
The Mobilising Men for Feminist Peace Project (MMFP) is Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom’s (WILPF) initiative to counter militarized masculinities and increase men’s active support for the Women, Peace and Security agenda. The project uses five broad social change strategies to mobilize men for gender equality, violence prevention, and peacebuilding: 1) alliance building, 2) research and analysis, 3) advocacy, 4) training, leadership development, and movement building, and 5) communications.
The current and second phase of the project will be implemented globally and in fourteen countries: six focus countries—Afghanistan, Cameroon, Colombia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Nigeria, and Yemen—and eight still to be determined as Local Action Fund (LAF) countries. The project website provides detailed information about project goals and activities.
Advocacy Support to Project Partners
- Assist project partners to formulate, develop, implement, achieve and document their country specific advocacy.
- Support alignment between country and global advocacy goals, including in UN meetings and mechanisms goals, broadly focused on: 1) expanded use of UN HRC Resolution 35/10; 2) masculinities in small arms control; 3) supporting conscientious objectors and ending conscription;4) alternatives to militarized peacekeeping; and 5) militarized masculinities, climate change and land dispossession.
Coordination of Training Institutes
- Work with WILPF’s International Sectariat (IS) and MenEngage colleagues to conceptualise, design, and implement two leadership development and training institutes that equip participants to mobilise men for feminist peace:
- A two week long residential training for emerging gender equality and peacebuilding activists.
- A weeklong institute for grassroots activists in the MENA region.
General Support to Focus Country Project Partners
- Plan and convene remote monthly one on one meetings with each focus country team to review progress, brainstorm together on next steps, and ensure effective implementation of project goals.
- Plan and convene quarterly focus country review and peer exchange meetings in person or remote.
- Plan and convene two face to face review meetings in countries that are yet to be determined based on visa accessibility and other relevant travel restrictions.
- Support focus country partners to submit quarterly narrative reports that analyze and describe project activities, identify lessons learned, and reflect on project challenges and opportunities.
- Ensure overall compliance with focus country commitments as established in their program design and their set objectives.
General Support to Local Action Fund (LAF) Partners
- Coordinate call for proposals, convene selection committee, and select eight global LAF partners.
- Plan and convene LAF inception and peer exchange training and capacity building processes.
- Provide ongoing support to LAF partners to assist them to reflect on project implementation and
- Support peer exchanges between focus countries and LAF partners.
- Ensure regular submission of project reports by LAF partners.
Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning
- Adapt, develop, and oversee the implementation of the project MEL strategy as needed, and ensure integration of lessons learned from MEL processes amongst project partners, IS colleagues, and the broader programmatic field.
- Check on implementation of MEL plans, including MEL tools, and MEL reporting.
- Review and follow-up on MEL reports from partners.
- Share reporting templates and ensure that they are used.
Relations and Fundraising
- Ensure timely submission to donors of high quality quarterly and annual reports.
- Work with the Project Director and other IS colleagues to ensure the availability of ongoing project funding: identify and engage potential funders, and write concept notes and proposals consistent with WILPF’s broader fundraising strategy.
Knowledge, Skills and Competencies
- 7-10 years’ experience working to implement the Women’s Peace, and Security (WPS) agenda and/or on mobilizing men for gender equality, violence prevention and peacebuilding.
- Strong commitment to WILPF’s feminist values and to engaging partners based on collaboration and trust.
- Proven track record in developing and advancing national and global advocacy goals.
- Proven track record developing and implementing leadership development and/or training courses and/or institutes.
- Prior experience working on multi-country projects, especially in the project’s focus countries of Afghanistan, Cameroon, Colombia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Nigeria, and Yemen a plus.
- Extensive connections with key actors and organisations working on peacebuilding and/or mobilising men for feminist peace.
- Demonstrated experience supporting fundraising efforts.
- Excellent interpersonal skills. Experience working with global, diverse teams across time zones and locations, both co-located and remote. Ability to collaborate and work well in a team setting. Ability to build strong and genuine interpersonal relationships.
- Proven project management skills. Ability to establish priorities and to maintain a variety of projects and activities simultaneously, while meeting quick deadlines during busy times.
- Strong collaborative skills and ability to organize work across programmes and teams to achieve common objectives.
- Excellent communication skills. Ability to effectively communicate across a multicultural and multilingual staff, as well as with internationally based membership sections.
- Excellent organizational skills with the ability to prioritize work and take initiative. Detail oriented. Ability to quickly pivot to evolving organizational priorities, based on fluid programmatic contexts in complex conflict environments.
- Ability to work autonomously on tasks.
- Fluency in written and spoken English (French and/or Spanish a plus).
Education and Experience
- University degree in international relations, conflict resolution, peace-building, human rights, development studies, gender studies, women’s rights, or social sciences (or another related field).
- Previous experience in an INGO is a plus.
WILPF will provide the MMFP Coordinator with compensation commensurate with experience. Compensation will also be based on the location of the selected candidate.
This position can be remote, with required travel to in-person meetings to fulfill the duties of the position as listed above. Office space is available in Geneva and New York City should the candidate prefer to work onsite.
