About Action for Development (AfD)

Action for Development is an NGO with offices in Geneva, Switzerland, and Kabul, Afghanistan.  AfD aims to ensure that funding for health and community development programs is spent in ways that maximize its impact, partnering with local organizations at the grassroots level.  The main focus areas of our programs are strategic health facilities management, maternal, neonatal, and child health services expansion, family planning, water, sanitation and hygiene, women's empowerment, capacity building, and education. In 2014, AfD was granted consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).

Responsibilities of the Public Health Specialist:

AfD is seeking an experienced Project Manager based in Geneva to support the setup and establishment of a primary health centre in Kabul, Afghanistan.  The Project Manager will play a critical role in overseeing all aspects of the centre setup to it’s full operation and ensuring the project is completed on time and within budget.

Specific activities:

  • Project Planning: Develop a comprehensive project plan that outlines all tasks, timelines and resources required for the setup and operation of the health center.
  • Budget Management: Manage the project budget, tracking expenses and problem solving to ensure no cost overruns
  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensure compliance with local regulations and healthcare standards.
  • Site selection: Coordinate needs assessment to determine health centre location.
  • Staff Recruitment: Support staff recruitment.
  • Equipment and Supplies: Support identification of needs and procurement process.
  • Timeline Management: Monitor project milestones and adjust the project plan as needed to ensure on-time delivery.
  • Local engagement: Ensure there is regular and effective engagement with local communities,  authorities and other health service providers.
  • Reporting: Provide timely progress reports to stakeholders including project status, budget updates and issues or challenges encountered.

Required Qualifications:

  • Degree in Public Health, Environmental Health, Environmental or Biological Science, Data Analysis/ Management, or in a similar field.
  • Background in nutrition, pharma, epidemiology, or public health is an asset. 
  • Detail-orientated, good organizational skills, ability to work independently and in a team.
  • Strong skills in English written and spoken.

Terms of the Contract:

  • Please note that this is an unpaid part-time volunteer position.
  • Time Commitment: minimum of one day per week, either working in the office or remotely. The candidate should ideally be based in Geneva.
