Background

The Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI) is the international body representing national human rights institutions (NHRIs), which are independent state bodies with a constitutional and/or legislative mandate to protect and promote human rights. To date, more than 110 NHRIs exist worldwide, 78 of them being in full compliance with the United Nations Paris Principles. 

GANHRI is lead implementing agency for the EUfunded project Capacity Building of National Human Rights Institutions: Phase 3 project (NHRI.EU.3). GANHRI’s co-implementing partners from the four global regions are:  

  • AfricaNetwork of African National Human Rights Institutions (NANHRI)  
  • AmericasNetwork of the National Human Rights Institutions from the Americas (RINDHCA) 
  • Asia PacificAsia Pacific Forum of National Human Rights Institutions (APF)  
  • Europe: European Network of National Human Rights Institutions (ENNHRI).

The project’s overall objectives is to enhance the role of National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs) and their global and regional networks in promoting and protecting the human rights of all individuals. with further objectives being to: 

  • Strengthen NHRIs’ effectiveness to protect and promote human rights defenders and civic space; support and protect NHRIs when under threat in line with the 2018 Marrakech Declaration and follow-up frameworks (Strategic Objective 1) 
  • Strengthen the accreditation process and support the work of the Sub-Committee on Accreditation (SCA); support the establishment, strengthening and accreditation of NHRIs to be in compliance with the Paris Principles (Strategic Objective 2) 
  • Enhance NHRIs’ effectiveness in identified thematic areas to advance sustainable development through human rights (Strategic Objective 3) 
  • Continue strengthening GANHRI and the four regional networks, including their secretariats, to be able to better serve and support their member NHRIs (Strategic Objective 4). 

Objectives 

The NHRI.EU.3 project presents an opportunity for GANHRI to showcase how partnerships with NHRIs, regional networks and other stakeholders are addressing key human rights issues at the national, regional and international levels. Clear, consistent and strategic communication will be key to supporting and realising the project’s objectives. 

In particular, we envisage three communication goals: 

  • Promote the mandate, role and impact of Paris Principles-compliant NHRIs, GANHRI and the regional networks  
  • Give visibility to priority human rights issues and the contribution of NHRIs, GANHRI and the regional networks in driving change 
  • Strengthen partnerships and exchange among NHRIs, GANHRI and the regional networks. 

For this purpose, GANHRI is recruiting a content writer on a consultancy basis to support the range of communication activities for the advancement NHRI.EU.3 workplan. 

Responsibilities 

The content writer will work under the overall supervision of the Communications and Event Officer and will: 

  • Draft news articles, media releases, publications and other supporting content on issues and events related to the work and priorities of GANHRI and NHRIs, including on activities related to the NHRI.EU.3 project; 
  • Develop content for the GANHRI website, social media channels and quarterly newsletter; 
  • Proofread and edit content before publication. 

Qualification and education requirements 

  • University degree in media/communications or in a related field; a specialisation in international relations and human rights would be an asset. 

Competencies: 

  • Strong knowledge of human rights and UN human rights mechanisms; 
  • Excellent writing and editing skills in English (native level); knowledge of French, Spanish and/or Arabic an asset; 
  • Ability to communicate simply, clearly and effectively; 
  • Knowledge of website content management systems (WordPress); 
  • Graphic design for publications, reports and flyers, as well as content for website, social media channels and email-based distribution (Canva, Mailchimp); 
  • Edit and produce video materials, including short animations, an asset; 
  • Edit and produce podcast materials and asset; 
  • Ability to meet deadlines; 
  • Excellent research skills; 
  • Proficient in all Microsoft Office applications; 
  • Ability to work in a team, as well as independently. 

Experience 

A minimum three years’ proven work experience as a content writer, copywriter or similar role. Experience in writing on human rights issues is an asset.
