Background

Founded in 2014, the Humanitarian Exchange and Research Centre (HERE-Geneva) is an independent organisation that examines the gaps between policy and humanitarian practice. Our team of experienced researchers and analysts are dedicated to building evidence and putting forward constructive analyses of where the gaps are, and where gains can be made for governments and agencies to fulfil their humanitarian responsibilities and commitments. We have built a track record in working with partners such as donor governments, UN agencies, Red Cross and Red Crescent organisations, NGOs, and foundations.

Objective

The role of Research Officer is to provide comprehensive research and administrative support as required by senior staff on all aspects of one or more HERE projects, to ensure their successful delivery. Under the supervision of HERE’s Research Director, who is the line manager, the research officer contributes to HERE’s high-quality research, policy advice and engagement with a view to informing and inspiring humanitarian policy and practice.

This position is based in Geneva, Switzerland.

Responsibilities and Tasks

1. Supporting the design, delivery and management of research projects:

  • Draft literature reviews and analyses
  • Coordinate and carry out data collection (through qualitative and quantitative methods) in accordance with study protocols, including managing data integrity, ensuring confidentiality and the safe storage of records and files.
  • Develop, review and comment on draft research tools, such as questionnaires/surveys, and editing draft reports.
  • Draft reports and/or parts of reports as agreed.

2. Supporting submissions of research proposals:

  • Contribute technical inputs to research proposals, expressions of interest and full project proposals, with a particular focus on methodological approaches and analytical frameworks.
  • Maintain a library of grant support documents, including CVs, bios, HERE track record, etc.

3. Other duties:

  • Represent HERE where relevant.
  • Propose ideas for publication and dissemination of HERE’s research.
  • Contribute to learning within HERE.
  • Contribute to HERE’s daily functioning and inspire teamwork.

Qualifications

  • Post-graduate degree in a relevant discipline. Knowledge of humanitarian action is an asset.
  • Highly developed qualitative and quantitative research skills and experience planning and conducting data collection and analysis. Knowledge of and experience with qualitative (e.g. MAXQDA) and quantitative data analysis software are an asset.
  • Thorough knowledge of research and evaluation methods, and capacity for developing analytical frameworks/evaluation logic models.
  • Strong analytical skills, and ability to rapidly analyse and integrate diverse information from varied sources.
  • Vision or ideas on the use of Artificial Intelligence in conducting research and evaluations (desirable)
  • Capacity to write clearly and persuasively, and top-class verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proven organisational and time management skills, including managing a complex and varied workload.
  • Fluency in English, and preferably a good command of at least one other language key to humanitarian affairs (e.g. French, Arabic, Spanish).
