Background
The International Hospital Federation and Geneva Sustainability Centre (the Centre) are seeking to appoint a proactive and experienced programme manager to help manage and implement its programme of work. This is an exciting role that will suit a self-motivated candidate who wants to generate real impact at the nexus of climate change and healthcare services.
Headquartered with the International Hospital Federation (IHF) in Switzerland, the Centre’s vision is to equip a global community of hospital leaders with the skills they need to lead their organizations on their sustainability journey. The Centre supports hospital leaders with executive training, tools and support to address the sustainability challenges of today and tomorrow. Through this work, the Centre seeks to reduce the healthcare sector’s direct contributions to global carbon emissions and accelerate the transition of hospitals to low-carbon healthcare.
Position Overview
This new programme lead will play a key role in the Centre’s core team. Under the direction and supervision of the Executive Director, the Programme Lead will lead, manage and support the delivery of a high-quality portfolio of project and programmatic initiatives focused on supporting healthcare leadership development for sustainability. This role ensures that the Centre has a front-facing focus for International Hospital Federation members, proposing an approach that meets their needs, supports them on their sustainability journey and deploys/implements the Centre’s support package and products.
This position will suit an experienced healthcare professional with demonstrable expertise in programme management in a global context, and relevant experience in sustainability as well as a positive, ‘can do’ attitude. The postholder will work with a range of stakeholders from across the IHF global community to help hospitals on their journey towards a lower carbon, resilient and sustainable future.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
The post holder will be responsible for ensuring a considered approach to the Centre’s support to members by:
Programme Leadership, Management and Implementation
- Supporting the Centre’s Director, and other personnel with the development and implementation of the Centre’s approach to members, including relationship development, from outreach to needs assessment, contract development, tracking implementation, and member satisfaction.
- Developing and leading the approach to membership and stakeholder engagement including supporting the approach to corporate partners and funding partners.
- Collaborating with a wide range of key stakeholders in the healthcare sector – system leaders, clinical executives, third sector organisations and academic institutions at both national/international levels to ensure that the Centre programmes are continuously adding value to IHF members.
- Leading the development, and assuring the implementation, of multi-year projects and programmatic initiatives, with robust plans, well-defined metrics of success; proactively monitoring and tracking risks and issues; and ensuring resolution and escalation processes.
- Ensuring on behalf of the Centre that the World Hospital Congress becomes increasingly sustainable in its approach and delivery and leading the coordination and delivery of the Centre contribution to the yearly Congress.
- Supporting the coordination of and participation in programme delivery, team meetings and governance processes.
Governance and Reporting
- Ensuring effective reporting and governance processes for the Centre including:
- Leading the member focal point tracking processes for the Centre programmes
- Supporting the financial tracking and invoice processes for the Centre as needed.
- Contributing to the production of key strategic documents in support of the Centre’s work, such as strategic business cases and funding/grant applications to enhance revenue streams.
- Monitoring global leadership in sustainability developments, reports and initiatives from external stakeholders and partners which are relevant to the mission and work of the Centre.
Leadership and Team Working
- The Programme Lead may supervise 1-2 staff members depending on team structure and future developments.
- Providing leadership for Centre staff contributing to programmatic work, in line with specialist skills or competencies.
- Representing the Centre at Members’ and Partners’ external committees, conferences, meetings, and other similar events, at the request of the Centre Executive Director. This would involve international travel.
- Fostering a culture within the Centre and IHF that values respect, teamwork and excellence and contributes to a working environment in which all staff are empowered and respected.
Other Duties
- Ensures that the IHF membership support processes are part of a shared and aligned approach across the IHF and the Centre.
- As this is a hands-on ‘doing’ role: the post holder may be asked to undertake other reasonable duties in addition to those listed in this job description.
Profile Requirements
Prospective candidates will need to demonstrate these competencies during the recruitment process.
Essential Criteria:
- Educated to degree level in a relevant field (e.g., healthcare management or delivery; programme management; and sustainability, or similar area), or can demonstrate the equivalent level of knowledge gained through experience, which may be accepted in lieu of an advanced university degree.
- Demonstrable programme management expertise in at least two of the following: a customer-focussed setting, an international context, healthcare and/or environmental sustainability setting.
- Demonstrate a strong customer focus and skills in managing relationships to support a pipeline of negotiated delivery including outreach, leads development, development of MOUs, contract negotiation and finalisation, and support for the implementation of the agreed programme.
- Established programme management skills, including experience in developing and managing multiple deliverables from start to finish, delivering to tight deadlines and with multiple stakeholders.
- Ability to confidently engage with a range of stakeholders, at all organisational levels.
- Be self-supporting, with a strong motivation and passionate commitment to achieving effective sustainability action in healthcare and in support of improving human health.
- Be a native or fluent English speaker with excellent oral and writing skills (the operating language of the IHF/Centre is English).
- Highly proficient in the use of Microsoft Office suite, including MS Word, MS Outlook, MS PowerPoint, MS Excel and SharePoint.
- Ability to work remotely, blending in-person and virtual approaches as required.
- Swiss or EU citizenship or a valid work permit for Switzerland at the time of application is a pre-requisite as is the requirement to attend the IHF/Centre offices in person 2-3 days a week.
- Ability to travel internationally as required.
Desirable Criteria:
- Experience in healthcare delivery would be an asset.
- An understanding of leadership development and executive programmes would be a plus.
- Having good oral and writing skills in French would be a plus.
