I. MSF INTERNATIONAL

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an international, independent, medical humanitarian organization that delivers emergency aid to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, healthcare exclusion and natural disasters. MSF offers assistance to people based only on need and irrespective of origins, religion, gender or political affiliation. MSF consists of 6 Operation Centers (OCs), 3 European Supply Centers (ESCs) and 22 partner sections (PS).

MSF International provides coordination, information and support to the MSF Movement and implements international projects and initiatives as requested. MSF International also provides administrative support to the MSF Access Campaign.

II. POSITION BACKGROUND

MSF is in daily contact with the world's most vulnerable populations as part of its mission and is witness to the impact of climate change on these populations. This is why MSF has set itself the strong ambition to reduce its CO2 emissions by 50% by 2030 and to develop a more sustainable management of its operations.

In addition, MSF wants that its relationships with its suppliers and subcontractors create social added value for the employees directly involved in the realization of services and products as well as for the surrounding communities whether that be through social, economic, or environmental means.

It is with this dual ambition that we are implementing a sustainable procurement approach. In this framework, measuring the social and environmental performance of our supply chain becomes a priority for our organization.

To that effect, sustainable procurement in MSF is driven by a collaboration between the MSF Strategic Procurement Program (MSPP) and MSF’s Climate Smart Program. A joint roadmap has been established to integrate the sustainability of MSF’s procurement practices. This approach relies on the deepening of the relationships between our procurement teams and our suppliers. To achieve transparency and visibility of our complex supply chain, MSF works with supplier sustainability assessment tools which now have to be implemented at scale. There is a clear objective to have both a relevant part of MSF’s supplier base and MSF entities themselves assessed against their sustainability policies and commitments.
