Job Description

The World Organisation Against Torture – OMCT

Description

The World Organisation Against Torture (OMCT) is seeking to recruit a motivated and committed individual for the period from 15 November 2025 to 15 July 2026 to replace the holder of the position of Coordinator of the Global Torture Index Initiative during her maternity leave. The place of work is either the Geneva or the Brussels office of OMCT.

ABOUT OMCT

The World Organisation Against Torture (OMCT) is the world's largest coalition actively working to end torture, combat impunity, and protect human rights defenders. It works with some 200 member organizations grouped together in the SOS-Torture Network, present in over 75 countries. The OMCT's international secretariat is based in Geneva, with regional offices in Brussels and Tunis. The OMCT amplifies local voices, supports its partners in the field, and provides direct assistance to victims.

The OMCT has developed the Global Torture Index—a unique, data-driven tool designed to annually assess the risk of torture and other ill-treatment in every country. The first-ever Torture Index was launched on 25 June 2025 and  initially covers 27 countries across all five regions of the world , with plans for scaling up in subsequent years.

The Index evaluates national legal systems, public policies, and their real-world effects, measuring them against international human rights standards. It aims to inform governments, international organisations, and the public through an interactive and accessible online platform. The Index not only quantifies risk but also provides qualitative insights gathered from local civil society organisations and human rights defenders—highlighting systemic issues of this global underreported problem, emerging trends, and testimonies from survivors. By highlighting both challenges and examples of positive change, the Index serves as a powerful platform to support evidence-based action and foster greater compliance with human rights standards.
