Job Purpose

The purpose of the role is to manage the vital partnerships and relations that Sphere has with institutional, public and private donors. The postholder manages existing contracts, is responsible for reports and further proposals and is also responsible for instigating potential and new partnerships and to access additional sources of income in order to ensure organisational sustainability.

Main Responsibilities

1. Business development and fundraising
1.1. Maintain and manage good relationships with existing and prospective partners and donors.
1.2. Develop and contribute to Concept Notes, Expressions of Interest and funding proposals, and to oversee the preparation and submission of reports to donors.
1.3. Work closely with the Executive Director to support the identification and exploration of new business development and funding opportunities.

2. Membership
2.1. Support the planning, development, implementation and monitoring of Sphere’s membership strategy.
2.2. Promote membership, potential new members and member benefits and services.
2.3. Review membership criteria, priorities and needs and make recommendations to Executive Director.
2.4. Plan and manage membership events in coordination with other staff, including special workshops, networking events, Sphere’s General Assembly, and other events.

3. Public Relations
3.1. Support public relations for the organisation, including marketing, media management and public affairs.
3.2. Develop a clear, strong and targeted public presence for the organisation, across the humanitarian sector and stakeholders, seeking out and pursuing opportunities for the organisation to network across the sector.
3.3. Support network and partnership building for Sphere, including fostering new partnerships, profiling the organisation and promoting collaborative activities.
3.4. Work with the Executive Director and Executive Committee members to ensure that the organisation maintains its ability to access key relationships and to influence decision-makers.

4. Other
4.1. In consultation with the Executive Director, represent Sphere at key events, and humanitarian platforms and fora.
4.2. Support the development and review of annual operational and financial plans.
4.3. Any other duties as reasonably required by the Executive Director.
As the Sphere secretariat is a small team, each member of the team is expected to work collaboratively, including assisting and covering other areas of responsibilities as required.

Person specification

− You enjoy developing good working relations with counterparts in donor and foundation organisations, fund-raising and grant management.
− You embrace a spirit of problem-solving, communication and entrepreneurship to work with and adapt to multiple stakeholders around the world.
− Your colleagues describe you as an good communicator and you would be comfortable representing Sphere.
− You enjoy working in small teams and enjoy guiding others in their work.
− You have excellent oral and written English skills that are articulate and succinct, with other working languages as an asset.
− You would ideally have experience using Sphere in field operations and policy development, as well as hands-on humanitarian field experience in a management or technical role.
