Organisation:

Mercy Hands Europe (MHEU) is an international non-profit organisation based in Geneva, Switzerland, since 2019. Our mission is to empower vulnerable populations in disaster-affected areas, including Iraq, Syria, and Ethiopia, through sustainable projects and partnerships. We focus on education, protection, health, justice, agriculture, WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene), emergency response, and livelihoods.

Position:

We are seeking a Communication & Public Relations Intern to manage our digital presence and public relations efforts. The selected candidate will be responsible for overseeing MHEU’s communications, enhancing its visibility, managing social media platforms, and coordinating events to strengthen our outreach and engagement.  

  • Location: Geneva, Switzerland (in person)
  • Duration: 6 months (Part-time: 25 hours/week in the office)
  • Starting Date: as soon as possible 
  • Compensation: 250 CHF/month

Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Communication and Social Media Management:

    • Expand MHEU’s social media outreach by developing and implementing targeted strategies to enhance engagement, reach, and audience interaction.
    • Monitor and analyze social media performance metrics to optimize content strategy, stay updated on trends, and suggest innovative ways to boost engagement.
    • Supervise and regularly update MHEU’s social media platforms and website.
    • Oversee the organization's graphic design and create high-quality videos, infographics, and other visual content to enhance visibility and storytelling. 
    • Ensure a consistent and creative visual identity across all platforms.
    • Monitor and analyze social media performance metrics to optimize content strategy.
    • Manage community engagement
  • Event Organization & Public Relations: 

    • Create, coordinate, and implement events (e.g., conferences, workshops, awareness campaigns, networking opportunities) to enhance MHEU’s visibility and outreach.
    • Support public engagement, advocacy, and fundraising initiatives through strategic event planning.
    • Manage all event logistics, including scheduling, invitations, venue arrangements, and promotional materials.
    • Strengthen public relations by engaging with key stakeholders and building partnerships.
    • Represent MHEU in relevant forums, conferences, and public events to promote our mission and activities.
    • Develop and distribute press releases, newsletters, and other external communications. 
    • Perform any other tasks related to the responsibilities of the position, as assigned by the Executive Director.

Internship Objectives:

By the end of the internship, you will gain experience in:

  • Planning and organizing events from concept to execution to support outreach, advocacy, and fundraising efforts.
  • Managing event logistics and communications for a non-profit organization, with a strong focus on digital advocacy.
  • Executing effective public relations and online engagement strategies.
  • Creating social media content, including videos and visuals, to enhance digital visibility.
  • Designing strategic communication materials for humanitarian and development projects.
  • Expanding public relations efforts through active stakeholder engagement.

Requirements & Competencies:

  • Enrolled in a Bachelor's or Master's program in Communications, Marketing, Media, Public Relations, or a related field.
  • Strong interest in social media, digital marketing, and event coordination.
  • Excellent communication skills in English and French (C1–C2); any additional language is a plus.
  • Proficient in Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, MS Office, and Google Drive.
  • Creative mindset with a strong ability to design engaging visuals and videos, and excellent attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently as well as within an international, multicultural team.
  • One or more letters of reference, including the name, position, and contact details of the referee(s).
